We’ve all probably heard this saying. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Well let’s turn that around and ask it this way. How hard would you fight if you knew you couldn’t lose?
Whether we realize it or not that is more than just a question for philosophical discussion it is a reality for every Christian who will be obedient to the instructions that Paul has given to us here in the book of Ephesians.
What is the first thing that you must do in order to win the fight? What is the first thing you must do to successfully defend yourself against the attacks of the spiritual forces that wage war against you?
First of all we must quit trusting in ourselves and completely trust in Jesus Christ. That’s what Paul says in verse 10.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.”
Eph. 6:10 Just as the nation of Israel were assured of victory when they put their trust in the Jehovah and obeyed Him you too are assured of victory if you will first of all quit trusting in your own resources and trust completely in Christ.
Listen as long as you continue to trust in yourself, in your resources in your strength you are going to lose the fight, you will find yourself constantly defeated as a Christian.
Remember Paul’s words to the Corinthians
For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Paul wasn’t ashamed to admit his weaknesses. Why? Because in acknowledging that he was weak, by acknowledging that in his own strength he wasn’t up to the fight he was taking the first step towards victory. But it was only the first step. If we only admit that we are weak, we’ve only stated the obvious. The most important step is to follow Paul’s words in verse 10 to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. In other words we are to trust Christ to empower us in the battle. And Jesus Christ cannot yea, he will not fail us. Do you believe that? Do you live that way? When you find yourself in the midst of the battle, when confronted with temptation, when battling discouragement where do you turn? Do you turn to Christ?
Just a reminder that the way that we appropriate this strength is through prayer and the Scriptures. You say is it as easy as that? Yes it is, pray and ask the Lord for His strength and He instantly provides it. Immerse yourself in the Scriptures and you have that deep well of unending promises to draw from.
