But not only are we to be strong in the Lord, we are also to put on the whole armor of God.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Notice that there are a couple of things that we need to take note of. The first is that we are not at liberty to pick and choose which parts of the armor we will use. We are to put on the whole armor of God. Each piece that Paul describes in this passage is vital, it is absolutely necessary if we are going to be protected and proactive in our spiritual fight.
Two combatants, one has one a full suit of body armor and a full weapons package. The other guy has on shorts and a t-shirt and no weapon. Who do you think is going to win this fight? You say that’s obvious so obvious it’s absurd. The guy who was smart enough to properly protect himself and arm himself is going to win and they other guy is going to lose.
That’s Paul’s point. We must put on the whole armor of God, not a piece here and a piece there. We are to recognize the armor for what it is a complete protection package.
The word’s of the phrase “put on” have the sense of putting the armor on and never taking it off. Why? Because the fight never stops. The enemy never sleeps. The enemy is always looking for the chance to attack.
Ben and I like to read Lee Child who has a series of books whose main character Jack Reacher is a tough as nails ex army mp who is tougher than Jack Bauer and Chuck Norris combined. In the books he is a champion for the helpless, and those who have been treated unjustly. Guess when he likes to strike whatever enemy he’s facing? Four O’clock in the morning! Why? That’s when people are most susceptible to attack, they have let their guard down. They are sleepy and tired and not aware as they should be. When they least expect it, when the let down their guard for just a moment Reacher strikes and it’s game over!
Our enemy, Satan is infinitely more clever than Jack Reacher is, our enemy is infinitely more powerful than Jack Reacher is and that’s why we can’t let down our guard for a second, that’s why we need to constantly be on guard, that’s why we need to put on the armor that God provides and never take it off!
