Fourth I am to pick up the shield of faith.
What is Paul referring to? He is referring to your faith in Christ. Your ongoing trust in Christ for not only your salvation but also for your protection. When Satan begins to fire his fiery darts at you you are to continue to put your faith and your trust in Christ and in His ability and power to protect you.
Fifth we are to put on the helmet of salvation.
This gives us some insight into one of the areas that Satan, that our enemy will attack us and that is in the area of our thinking. He is going to directly assault us and try and confuse our thinking. We see this tactic at work in the Garden of Eden. This is the approach that he used with Eve. He confused her as to what God really had said, he got her to doubt the goodness of God. He hasn’t changed that strategy he does all that he can to get us to doubt God’s word, to doubt God’s goodness.
What is our protection against this onslaught? It is to protect ourselves with the helmet of salvation. This is why it’s so important that we have a good understanding of the gospel and how it impacts each and every area of our lives.
When Satan begins to attack us and accuse us we need to be able to reply to both him and ourselves that all those things may have been true of us that is no longer who we are in Christ.
Six we are to make skillful use of the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.
Paul is instructing us here to be ready to use the Sword in a skillful way. When we are attacked in a particular way or in an area that we know we are weak in, we are to be ready to wield the Sword with skill and precision, choosing just the right verse the right piece of Scripture to use in our defense and in our counterattack against Satan.
The illustration of this of course goes back to Jesus in his encounter with Satan after spending the time in the wilderness. If you remember Jesus didn’t use any random verse from Scripture, no He used specific Scriptures that that directly contradicted and deflected Satan’s attack.[/sws_author_bio_ui]
