Thomas’ last thoughts on Psalms 1. If you’ve been encouraged by his series, please leave a comment!
+ In the name of our risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen
1: Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2: But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and in his Law doth meditate day and night.
3: And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth, shall prosper.
4: The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff, which the wind driveth away.
5: Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the Congregation of the righteous.
6: For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
“Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous”.
To me this seems to refer to the Saints in Heaven, as Dr. John Gill writes: “[Those] who are made righteous by the righteousness of Christ imputed to them; and have a work of grace and holiness wrought in them; and who, under the influence of grace, live soberly, righteously and godly; these are the same with the blessed man, and who, at the day of judgment, will be perfectly holy, and free from all sin; and they will all be gathered together by the holy angels; the dead saints will be raised, the living ones will be changed, and both will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air, and will make up one general assembly and church of the firstborn; and among these, in the assembly, there will not be a single sinner, there are now sinners in Zion, foolish virgins with the wise, chaff and tares among Christ’s wheat, and wolves and goats among His sheep, but then, there will be an eternal separation, and no mixing together anymore.
“For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous…”
This is not to say that He does not know, or have intellectual knowledge of even the ways of the wicked. I believe that God not only knows, sees, and watches over the way of the righteous, but that He also approves of the way of the righteous. Even though that in this sense, “know” does mean an intellectual knowledge, and not a special love, I do think that this may be implied as well. God does love, know, see, and keep the way of the righteous.
The way of the righteous is not always smooth, nor is it always going to be a nice cool walk in the shade, and, of course, one’s walk is not the same as another’s. One may be on a rough way, while another may be on smooth ground at that time. Whatever the terrain is like for the Christian on his path, the way is always upward, and he ascends to the mount of God with each day.
“…but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
The ways of the wicked will not last forever. Their time shall end. In the parable of the wheat and tares, the tares are not pulled up and destroyed while the wheat grows. With longsuffering they are allowed to grow alongside the wheat. They are not, however, left as they are, but at the harvest are pulled up along with the wheat, and then burned. Though it seems as though they have been left to flourish, their way shall perish.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father: We ask Thee Lord, to let us be like the man who is blessed, who does not do as the wicked do, but delights in the Word of God, so much so that he meditates on it at all times. We pray Lord, that through this we may prosper. Help us, O Lord, to walk in the way that is known by Thee, and help us to be able to stand in the judgment, for we put our faith in Thee. We give thanks for the grace for these things. We ask this in the name of our risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever. Amen
