Theology is, in a word, the study of God.
Have you ever thought much about theology? Or do you think “theology” is only something that seminary students and pastors do? Does theology scare you? Everyday church members, just like you and me, don’t need to be scared or put off about the study of God. Studying things of the Lord is something all Christians can do by the power of the Holy Spirit – and more Christians should!
Do you want to think more about God’s goodness? Pick up your Bible and study. Have you ever wondered about God’s presence? Pick up your Bible and study. Do you have questions about the sovereignty of God? Pick up your Bible and study! Don’t let thoughts about God fly across your mind without a second thought! O, that we would be more committed to seeking and knowing the Lord. Don’t let fear or uncertainty cripple you from learning more about our great God and Savior.
There are plenty of resources available to guide your theological studies. A few of our favorites at Grace Community Church are:
- Desiring God, John Piper’s teaching ministry titled after his bestselling book
- Grace To You, John MacArthur’s Bible teaching ministry
- Truth for Life, Alistair Begg’s Bible teaching ministry
- The Gospel Coalition, a fellowship of evangelical churches
Of course, the biblical place to study theology is within the context of the local church alongside fellow believers. Our local church serves Berea, KY and surrounding areas. If you’re a stone’s throw away from Madison County Kentucky we warmly invite you to visit. If you’re not in the area, you can listen to or watch our sermons online. (And we would encourage you to find a Bible-teaching, Gospel-preaching church in your area!)
Theology isn’t something done only by old men in long robes. Rightly dividing the Word of Truth is a charge for all believers (2 Timothy 2:15). Don’t be afraid of theology! Learn about the God who made you and, as you learn, find yourself captivated in awe-inspired worship.
