What is one of the tenets of Christianity that makes it unique? The Resurrection!
What is one of the tenets upon which Christianity rises or fall? The Resurrection!
This is the second in a series of post as Grace Community Church prepares to celebrate Easter.
Most of us, if not all of us are familiar with the resurrection event. We know what transpired on that day. What we may not be as familiar with is the absolute necessity of the resurrection. Listen to what the Apostle John wrote chapter 20:9.
“for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.”
Notice that the last part of the verse says “that he MUST rise from the dead.” John says that Jesus must rise from the dead, it other words it was an absolute necessity that Jesus had to rise from the dead. It was a divine necessity that Jesus be resurrected.
My question is and I hope your question is why? Why must Jesus rise from the dead?
Here is the broad answer :
- The resurrection of Jesus had to happen or the character of God would be called into question.
- If Jesus had not been resurrected then a major flaw would have been uncovered in the character of God.
I shudder to even say those words. Jesus Christ had to rise from the dead because if He didn’t then God would not have been true to His Word. God is the one who said that He would not let his Son stay in the grave. The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 16:10
“For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. ”
Though this verse is from the Psalms, it is Jesus – God’s Son talking to His Father. Jesus says to the Father that you will not abandon my soul to Sheol – or to the grave and you have promised to me Father that you will not let my – your Holy One to see corruption – the corruption of death.
Now if Jesus had not been raised back to life then God’s Word would not be true.
Jesus himself said in Luke 24:46
“and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,”
Here Jesus is referring to the Old Testament Scriptures. If Christ hadn’t suffered and if he wasn’t raised from the dead then God’s Word would not be true.
If Jesus had not been raised from the dead then the Scriptures would not be true and God would be guilty of lying to us! But thankfully God has not lied to us, His word is true, God does not have a character flaw!
Reason Number one for the necessity of the Resurrection is the character of God. If God had not be true to His promise to His Son then you and I would not be able to put our trust and our hope in what God has said to us in His Word.
The good news is that God the Father was true to His word and that means that you and I as His children can have absolute confidence that whatever He has promised us in the Scriptures we can absolutely rely upon!
