[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/40611369[/vimeo]Hey everybody just a quick update on what’s going to be taking place at the church this week. First of all we will return to our study of the Gospel of John. Specifically we are going to look at John 8:30-36 where Jesus is going to teach us about what real freedom is. In our progressive little city of Berea everybody wants to be free, but the freedom they seek is in reality bondage. In this passage Jesus teaches us what freedom is and how it can be achieved.
[social_share/]Have you ever wondered what worship in heaven is going to be like? I admit I don’t think about it as much as I should. But recently I had an experience that really got me thinking about how we as believers will worship the Father for all that He has done for us through Jesus Christ.
Each year J.P. Morgan Chase holds an annual awards dinner and celebration for the top ten percent of their branch managers. My wife for the past two years has been blessed to manage a branch that has finished in this top tier. Recently we returned from this annual celebration.
It is an unbelievable time, one of those experiences that you almost have to be there to experience the full effect. Of course there is a nice fancy dinner where each person is personally served their meal and your water glass is never empty for very long. But the real highlight of the night is when the actual awards celebration begins. [Read more…]
Let’s begin today by asking an important question.
What is the rationale, or the reason that God commands us to be filled with the Holy Spirit? I think that’s a pretty good question. Here is the answer.
Fulfilling our purpose
If you and I are going to be a living revelation of what God’s plan and purpose is for His creation, if you and I are going to be a visible demonstration of the new community that God is creating, if we are going to fulfill the Lord’s goal of each one of His children growing up into the image of Christ. If we are going to live in harmony and unity, if we are going to walk in love and wisdom. None of those things can be successfully accomplished apart from the Holy Spirit filling us and empowering us to live out who we truly are. [Read more…]
Two sets of character qualities
That’s one set. Here is another set.
Believe it or not all of those traits describe the same person. [Read more…]
For a couple of months now I’ve been using an online tool called YouVersion for my daily Bible reading. I’ve tried using various Bible reading applications before and never found them to be very useful, but YouVersion is different.
I’ll highlight some of the features that I find to be very helpful. The first feature that I really like is that you can choose from a variety of reading plans. Of course you can choose the standard plan for reading through the Bible in a year. You can choose to read through the Bible in chronological order, or you can choose to read a blended plan or really ramp up your efforts and read through the New Testament in thirty days. Or how about reading through the entire Bible in just 90 days? That sounds pretty exciting doesn’t it!
They even have a reading plan that begins on December 1st for the Advent Season which I plan to start when my current reading plan ends in late November.
All of these plans offer different ways to read the Scriptures that add a little variety to the normal reading plans. But the thing I like the most is the accountability available to me. If you have a friend that uses YouVersion with you you can set them up as your accountability partner and they will be sent an e-mail if you begin to get behind. Or I have the system set to send me an e-mail if I get behind for a day or two. Very, very useful.
Finally if you have a smart phone or other such device they have what I consider to be one of my most useful and important apps.
With the New Year right around the corner, this may be something you want to check out for the coming year.
